The Sounds of Summer

Music abounds this summer throughout the Ames area with several outdoor entertainment options for you to enjoy the warmer weather and your tunes.  Throw the lawn chairs in the trunk and start making plans!

Experience live music on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons at Snus Hill Winery just outside of Ames. A family-friendly event that has hula-hoops, bocce ball and even a sand box for the kids, there’s a little something for everyone. Of course you’ll need to try some of Snus Hill’s signature wines, but make sure you pair it with a “grazing box” or sandwich from Sisters in Cheese who will be on site with a whole variety of goodies for purchase (Pre-orders for specific grazing boxes can be made by calling the Winery earlier in the week), and there will also be local food trucks for you to enjoy. Tables and chairs are available, but it is recommended to bring your own lawn chairs or blankets.

Ames Durham Bandshell has been a centerpiece for the Ames community for over seventy years and is located on the east end of historic Downtown Ames. It’s the perfect spot for families and friends to enjoy a summer night of music. On Thursday nights in June and July, the Ames Municipal Band entertains with free concerts. Each week the band of 50 (ranging from college-age to members in their 80’s) puts on different performances ranging from classical, hymns, Broadway and more. On Fridays, the park is home to the 16th Season of Ames on the Halfshell with different bands playing each week in June. Vast audiences gather each week to hear live music and visit with friends. Food and drinks are available for purchase throughout the night.

While you are exploring Downtown Ames during the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market make sure you check out the different musicians each week that bookend the market vendors. This year’s lineup includes wide variety of music including Asphalt & Stained Glass, Sweet Tater, Vanessa Ellsbury, Green Oaks and others. The music is always free and always fun.

Spend your Sundays at Prairie Moon Winery, at Live at the Crib, an outdoor music series featuring all types of bands. Bring your lawn chairs and sip wine under the summer sun each week from 3:00 – 5:00pm. Tickets are available at Prairie Moon when you arrive which includes one free signature drink. Find their music lineup on the Prairie Moon Facebook page

Our favorite gardens become a favorite music venue with the Reiman Gardens After Hours concert series. This quarterly event gives locals and visitors an opportunity to enjoy live music and experience the gardens at dusk. A buffet-style dinner is available for purchase, and indoor and outdoor seating is available. While enjoying the beauty of the gardens attend FUEL Fest with the family. This event happens on the last Thursday of every month through October. Enjoy the live music, local food trucks and beverages.

Save the date for Burgie’s Open Mic Night at the end of every month. Sign-ups start at 6:00pm and the performances start at 6:30. Have fun with friends, enjoy some coffee and homemade bakery products, and have an evening filled with entertainment!
