Quidditch Comes to Story County with 2016 Midwest Regional Championships

“Flying” broomsticks…capturing the snitch…quidditch is here and you can see it live! The US Quidditch 2016 Midwest Regional Championships are coming to SCORE Recreational Athletic Complex, in Nevada. The event will be held on November 12-13, and will be hosted by the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau and Nevada Parks and Recreation.

The US Quidditch 2016 Midwest Regional Championships will feature teams from Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Quidditch, inspired by the Harry Potter novels, is a fast paced, gender integrated, full-contact sport, and is a cross between basketball, soccer, and dodgeball. Quidditch is played with seven players to a team, all mounted on brooms. Scoring points occurs with a quaffle (volleyball) and the snitch, a neutral yellow-clad athlete who tries to avoid being captured.

“We’re really looking forward to our event in Nevada! The facility we’re at, SCORE Recreational Athletic Complex, has great amenities,” said Mary Kimball, Events Director for US Quidditch. “Working with the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau has made planning go so smoothly. We’re excited to bring our teams from the Midwest region to Iowa for an awesome weekend of quidditch.”

The general public is welcome to attend and see one of the fastest-growing sports based on a fantasy series. Event times are 9am-5pm both Saturday and Sunday, with free admission. For a closer view of the game, consider volunteering at the Championships. Those interested in volunteering can learn more by calling the Ames Convention & Visitors Bureau at 515.232.4032.
