Jazz Impressions exhibit

Wed / June 1, 2022 Wed / July 20, 2022
10:00 am – 2:00 pm / Memorial Union Art Gallery, 2229 Lincoln Way

The Memorial Union Art Gallery is hosting an exhibit of paintings by Joanie McGinnis of Fairfield, Iowa, titled “Jazz Impressions.” Note that the exhibition hours are Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

Inspired by the sounds of improvisational jazz greats like Miles Davis, Stan Getz, and Dave Brubeck, the vibrant colors and sweeping brushstrokes splashed across the canvas place these works squarely in the Abstract Expressionist tradition.

An exhibit reception will be held on Sunday, June 12 from 2-4 p.m. with an opportunity to meet the artist. As you stroll through the Gallery, experience improvisational interpretations of McGinnis’ paintings by Mike Giles, professor of saxophone and director of jazz studies at Iowa State.

The Iowa State Memorial Union is located at 2229 Lincoln Way in Ames on the ISU campus, and paid parking is available in the ramp adjacent to the building. The Art Gallery is located on the 1st floor and has free admission. For more information visit and
