Bicyclists from RAGBRAI, the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, will be arriving in Ames on Tuesday, July 24, and spending the night before continuing their eastward trek across the state. To provide an overview of the event, including information on how to get involved, two Town Hall meetings have been scheduled for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, at Ames City Hall City Council Chambers, 515 Clark Ave.
“This is a terrific opportunity to promote Ames to guests from around the state, the country, and the world,” said Julie Weeks, Executive Director the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s also a great opportunity for residents and businesses to get involved through volunteering or sponsorships.”
The RAGBRAI route into Ames takes bicyclists from the west along Mortensen Road before heading north on Beach Avenue to South Fourth Street. Campsites will be located at Stuart Smith Park, the grass lots on South 16th Street, and Brookside Park, but expect to see cyclists all over town. Residents should plan ahead and allow extra time to get around town that day. Downtown Ames will serve as the hub for entertainment. Bicyclists will depart on Wednesday, July 25, and the exit route is east on Southeast 16th Street to Dayton Avenue.
“These Town Hall meetings are being offered so residents aren’t surprised by RAGBRAI activities, and they know how to get involved,” Weeks added. “We had great volunteer and business support 10 years ago, and we’re looking forward to another fantastic Ames RAGBRAI in 2018.”
Volunteers are needed to welcome riders, host bicyclists, help at campsites, staff information areas, become a sponsor, and be a part of many more opportunities.
